Saint Patrick’s Day 3D Rainbow Art Project

While we’re never at school for Saint Patrick’s Day, it’s always fun to get into the spirit with an art project for the occasion. What’s more fun than a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow?!

I designed this project to use different techniques and materials but luckily it’s very low prep. This project is simple enough but students may need a little support, especially once they are curving the rainbow. Depending on your class, you may want to do part this part in a small group.

Time: 45-60 minutes

Materials

  • Cardstock

  • Green & blue paint (we use tempera paint pucks)

  • Paint brush

  • Pencil

  • Glue

  • Scissors

  • Black construction paper (1/2 sheet per student)

  • Rainbow construction paper strips

  • Glitter

  • Tape (optional)

Teacher prep:

  • Cut black construction paper sheets in half. Each student needs one half sheet.

  • Pre-cut the rainbow strips along the long edge. Each student will need one of each colour.

Procedure:

  1. Paint a green hill on the card stock, then paint the sky blue. Leave the background to dry.

*Make sure the page isn’t too wet. We need it to dry while we prepare the other elements

  2. Using the half sheet of black construction paper, draw a pot and cut it out. Use the entire sheet to ensure that all rainbow strips fit.

  3. I pre-cut the rainbow strips ahead of time but you could have students use a ruler and cut their own. Arrange them in rainbow order (R-O-Y-G-B-V) and make a fan. We want them fanned out but try not to have too much space in between. Glue them together at the bottom.

  4. Now take the pot and glue it onto the rainbow fan. We don’t want too much of the strip covered up by the pot.

  5. Now for the tricky part, curve each rainbow strip back behind the card stock background. If glue doesn’t hold, use tape to secure each strip.

  6. The pot of gold should be dangling in front now (image 6). Glue just the bottom of the pot to the background so that it remains partially lifted off the paper.

  7. Add a bit of glue to the top of the pot and add glitter. Alternatively, cut out some gold coins.
