Rad Robots Art Project

This project is low-mess and leaves a lot of creative interpretation up to your students. A perfect project to keep in your back pocket for when you’re not sure what to do for art that week.

Suggested grade: 2-4

Time required: 45-60 minutes (*Or less, it’ll really depend on how long they spend on their robot.)

Materials:

  • White paper (one for background, one for robot)

  • Paint sticks *

  • Pencil & eraser

  • Sharpie

  • Pencil crayons

  • Scissors & glue stick

*If you don’t have paint sticks, you can do the background with markers, or paint instead. With paint you’ll need to keep dry time in mind.

*I use Shuttle Art paint sticks off Amazon

Steps (can be done in either order)

BACKGROUND :

  • Choose 4 colours for paint sticks

  • Select 2 colours and alternate lines vertically down the page. Leave some white in between. It’s easier to do all of one colour, leaving spaces in between, then do all the second colour in the middle of each line.

  • Rotate your paper and select the other 2 colours. Repeat these steps with lines going the other way.

*Paint sticks don’t require dry time, so you can attach your robot right away.

ROBOT :

  • Students have creative freedom over their robot design. You may choose to do a directed drawing instead.

  • Students will be cutting out their robot so they shouldn’t have small things coming out of the sides as it’ll make it more difficult to cut and risks blending into the background too much. Less is more and simpler is better. Larger sections will make it stand out.

  • Draw the robot in pencil first.

  • Trace the robot and erase pencil lines.

  • Colour the robot with pencil crayons.

  • Cut around the outside, leaving some white to make it easier.

  • Glue the robot onto the background.
