Ocean Sunset Art Project

I’ve seen lots of versions of this project online and it was such a fun one to try with my students. It’s the perfect opportunity to practice ruler skills.

Time required: 45-60 minutes

Materials:

  • White paper

  • Pencil & eraser

  • Sharpie

  • Ruler

  • Watercolour paints (I use tempera pucks)

Steps:

  • Draw 3 wavy lines for the water (horizontal orientation).

  • Draw half a circle in the middle of the page, above the water for the sun.

  • Use a ruler to draw diagonal lines from the sun to the edge of the paper. Make sure to leave space between them, we don’t want them too close together.

  • Trace with a Sharpie and erase pencil lines.

  • Paint the scene using watercolour paints.

    • Generally we did warm and cool colours, though students were allowed to use purple in their sun rays as the sky sometimes gives that pinkish-purple colour.
