Kandinsky Inspired Fall Trees Kids Art Project
Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian painter who greatly valued colour in his artwork. This project is inspired by his famous abstract circle painting. There is a lot of freedom in this project and it’s perfect for working on fine motor as there’s a lot of cutting.
Please note: This project was created by Art Projects for Kids, you can find the original post here. I adapted it slightly to fit my students’ needs. I have since adapted to make it a fall version. You can find my version with the vibrant colours here.
Suggested grade: grade 2+
Time required: up to 1 hour
Materials:
Scissors
Glue stick
Pencil
Yellow oil pastel
Construction paper
squares in multiple fall colours (red, orange, yellow, browns)
half sheet brown
full sheet black
Teacher prep:
Cut brown paper in half. Each student will need one.
Cut construction paper in various colours into squares. They don’t need to all be the same size, we’ll be cutting them up anyways.
Steps:
On the brown construction paper, draw a tree shape with branches. Cut it out and glue onto the black paper. Flip it over so that you don’t see any pencil marks.
Using the small squares, cut circles in various sizes. Arrange your circles so that you can stack 3-4 going from largest to smallest and glue the circles together. There is no need for them to be perfectly round (perfect for young artists!).
Make a variety of sizes and colours for the circle “leaves”. Make enough circles to cover your tree (usually 6-8) and arrange them to glue on the branches.
Cut a moon out of yellow paper and glue it to the black paper.
Use an oil pastel to create stars in the sky. Alternatively, cut out of paper.
