Colourful Spider Web Kids Art Project
This is a fun project whether students celebrate Halloween or not.
While spiders are often associated with Halloween, they’re an animal that exists in the world and we see lots of them in the fall.
This bright project is sure to bring some colour to the dreary fall days.
Suggested grade: 2-4
Time required: up to 1 hour
Materials:
White paper (regular weight or card stock)
Ruler
Pencil & eraser
Sharpie
Watercolour paint (+ paintbrush and water)*
Black construction paper
Scissors
Glue stick
Googly eyes
*Alternatively use crayons, pencil crayons or markers for the background to avoid using paint.
Steps:
Web
Start with a pencil and ruler. Draw an X joining the corners together.
Now create a +, making sure the lines meet in the middle of the X.
Starting in the middle, create curves between the straight lines. Work your way outwards to fill the page.
Trace lines with a Sharpie and erase pencil marks.
Use watercolour paint to paint the sections of the web. Spread out the colours to not have two of the same touching.
*Alternatively use pencil crayons, crayon or marker for this step.
Spider (to do while background dries)
Give students a small square of paper and have them cut out a circle for the body.
Students will get another bit of black paper and cut 8 thin strips for legs.
Using an accordion folding technique, fold legs and attach them to the back of the spider body.
Put glue on the back of the spider and attach it to the web.
Add googly eyes if desired. Be careful, black construction paper tends to be dyed by glue. Put the glue on the back of the eye, then attach. Don’t put the glue stick directly on the spider.
