End of the Rainbow Finger Painting Art Project

This is a fun finger painting for Saint Patrick’s day, a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow!

I know some kids have a lot of trouble dipping their fingers in paint for sensory reasons, if that’s the case, they could use some cotton buds instead.

Timeline: 45-60 minutes

Materials:

  • White paper (we used 11x17 but you can use 8.5x11)

  • Black construction paper (1/4 per student)

  • Tempera paint in rainbow colours

  • Glue stick

  • Pencil

  • Scissors

  • Gold glitter (optional)

    • Alternatively, you could cut out some gold coins out of yellow construction paper.

Steps:

  1. Cut out a pot of gold out of construction paper and glue it to either the left or right bottom corner.

If doing glitter, we’ll do this as the very last step.

  2. This is a bit of a “just go for it” type of thing because while you can sketch out where your lines go, they’ll be seen through the dots so if you do need to give yourself a guide, just do the top or bottom arch only, then the rest should fall into place.

  3. Going one colour at a time, dip your finger into the paint and make dots for the rainbow. Then, move onto the next colour.

  4. Some students opted to make shamrocks with their green paint too!

  5. If doing glitter, wait until your painting is dry to add so that it doesn’t end up in the wet paint. If you’re doing paper coins, go ahead and glue them on now.
