English & French Complex Sound Project
This project came about because someone reached out to me with this idea for a culminating task for students to complete. She wanted to know if I had something like that or if I knew anyone who did. I didn’t, but we flushed out the idea and I decided to make it. Win for her, but a win for me too because I loved the idea and knew I wanted to do it with my class. So big thank you to her!
This project is available in FRENCH and ENGLISH. My examples are in French but use the English template if that’s what you teach. Maybe you use UFLI or another phonics program that you want to celebrate.
OPTION 1: year-end project
This version would be done at the end of the school year as a review and celebration of all their learning. Perfect for those last few weeks when things are winding down but you’re trying your best to keep everyone going. A project that will take them several days if done with care is a great way to fill up that time in a meaningful way.
Step 1: Choose the sounds
How you decide which sounds they do is up to you. Maybe you tell them or maybe you give them a list to choose from. 8 sounds is suggested (but you can do more or less).
Step 2: Plan it out
Once they choose their sounds, they’ll complete a plan page. This is to help with spelling and ensure neatness on the good copy. For each sound they need 6 words and one sentence featuring the target sound.
Step 3: Booklet
Now it’s time to do the good copy. Students will copy their words and sentence into their booklet. At the top of each page is a space for them to feature the sound. I chose bubble letters in mine.
They will also illustrate their sentence in the provided box.
Don’t forget to decorate the front!
There is also a table of contents page provided if you choose to have them add that.
OPTION 2: year-long project
In this version students complete a page every time a new sound is learned. Figure out how many sounds you teach in a year and print that many pages. You’ll want to either omit the table of contents page or use the blank version instead as the other one in the document only has 8 spots.
