Stained Glass Poppy Art Project

We all know the poem “In Flanders Fields” written by John McRae in 1918 during the First World War. This project is a celebration of the symbolism of poppies and is a beautiful display for Remembrance Day.

Timeline: 45-60 minutes

Materials:

  • Cardstock

  • Pencil

  • Black, red and green oil pastel

  • Watercolour (we use tempera paint pucks)

  • Medium paint brush

Procedure:

  • Orient the page vertically. We will sketch out the scene in pencil first.

  • Draw 4-5 poppies. We want them to take up space, so encourage students to make larger flowers. They’ll be easier to colour too. An easy way to think about drawing them is four squished heart shapes. Add a stem that goes all the way down.

  • Draw a hill behind the poppies by drawing a few curved lines.

  • Draw the sky with wavy lines as if different pieces of glass were put together.

  • Use the red oil pastel to colour in the poppies.

  • Use the green oil pastel for the poppy stems.

  • Use the black oil pastel for the poppy centre and all pencil lines. Make sure they are dark, this will also help keep your paint in place.

  • Paint the background using water based paint. If you have different blue paints, it looks nice to have the different colours in the sky.
