Directed Drawing Reindeer Portraits Art Project

This one is pretty simple and I just draw it with my students on the whiteboard but there are tons of videos of directed drawings for this project. Just Google or YouTube “reindeer directed drawing” and you can pick one that you like.

Time required:

  • drawing step ~15-20 minutes

  • colouring or painting step ~20-30 minutes

Materials:

  • White paper

    • If painting, I suggest using card stock. If using a “dry” medium, printer weight is fine.

  • Pencil

  • Sharpie

  • Colouring tool (paint, pencil crayons, crayons etc)

  • Optionally - white crayon or oil pastel (for snowflakes)

Steps:

  1. Draw an oval in the middle of the page (head).

  2. Towards the bottom of the oval, draw a rounded circle (nose).

  3. Draw two smaller ovals for the eyes and add in some pupils.

  4. Draw two ears on the side of the head, towards the top.

  5. Add some antlers at the top of the head.

  6. Draw a neck that comes down from the head to the bottom of the page.

  7. Draw a scarf around the neck. Depending where the scarf sits on the page, they may have it extend downwards or out to the side.

  8. Trace the whole reindeer with a Sharpie.

  9. If you’re going to be painting, now is a good time to add some snowflakes with white crayon or oil pastel. Then, when you paint overtop, they’ll appear. The snowflakes are an optional step.

  10. Colour! You can use any medium or combination you choose.
