Mummy Eyes Halloween Art Project

These spooky mummy eyes are such a fun Halloween project! I saw a version of this project online and just had to recreate it. The oil pastels are a bit messy but this is a no-paint project that can be completed in one art session.

Time required: 45 - 60 minutes

Materials:

  • Black construction paper

  • White or beige construction paper

  • White paper (eye print out)

  • Oil pastels (various colours, including black)

  • Scissors

  • Glue

Teacher prep:

  • Print out the eye template (see bottom of blog post). If your toner is as light as mine, don’t worry! They’ll be colouring in the pupil.

Steps:

  1. Using the oil pastels, choose 3-4 complimentary colours for the eyes.

  2. Start at the pupil and making up a ring around it. Then begin the next colour. They can blend together!

  3. Continue until the eye is full. It’s ok if it goes outside the lines, we’ll be cutting off the excess.

  4. Fill in the pupil with black oil pastel.

5. Using the beige or white construction paper, carefully rip it into strips along the long edge. I got about 5-6 strips per page.

6. To add some dimension, use brown and white pastel to add some “oldness” to the cloth strips.

7. Cut out the eyes and glue then into the middle of the black paper (landscape).

8. Glue the cloth strips around the mummy. They can further rip them to make them fit.

9. The cloth strips will be hanging off the edges, so you can flip over the sheet and trim off the excess.
