Cursive Creatures Name Symmetry Art Project

Let your name be the source of your creativity. This fun project allows students to create a unique creature using their name. Instructions are for a cursive version, but it’s also possible to do it with regular printed letters. This project requires no prep so it’s great to leave for a TOC or to do when you forgot you needed an art project this week!

TIMELINE: 45-60 minutes

MATERIALS

White paper

Pencil

Sharpie

Colouring tools (crayons, pencil crayons or markers)

STEPS

1. Fold the paper lengthwise in half, then open it up.

2. On one side, write your name in cursive letters, taking up the entire length. Make the pencil lines dark.

3. Fold the paper and trace the lines that you can see through the paper. Push hard so that the pencil makes a groove in the paper.

4. Unfold the paper and trace the lines that were made by step 3.

5. Use a black marker to trace the name on both sides.

6. Rotate the paper vertically and look for body elements in the name.

7. Add eyes, a mouth, feet etc. along with other details.

8. Colour your creature with crayons, pencil crayons or markers.

ALTERNATIVE

Write name in printed capital or lowercase letters. The letters should each touch at some point. Follow same steps.
