3D Blended Candy Cane Art Project
Time required: 45 minutes
Suggested grade: 2-5
Materials:
Black construction paper
White paper
Candy cane tracer
Pencil
Oil pastel
Scissors
Glue stick
Tissue (optional)
A note about the tracers:
You can use ANY candy cane shape or size you want! This is what I used for the shape. It’s a free download I found on TPT. If doing a large version with large construction paper, just keep this size.
For the regular construction paper version, you can simply print two per page (which defaults to 63% according to my printer settings).
I wanted them slightly larger than that so I did a few extra steps and made two copies of single candy canes scaled at 75%, cut them out and glued them back onto a white sheet together. I then used that one to copy as my template.
I printed on card stock then cut out the tracers because I didn’t want the sections as small as they are in the template shape and it gives the students the ability to flip the hook to either side but you can skip right over the tracing and give students the printed sheet instead if you’d like.
Steps:
Note #1: You can make this larger and use 11x14 and large construction paper instead.
Note #2: When choosing colours, try to choose two colours that could be seen as a lighter and darker version of each other. Students will need 4 colours, plus white for each candy cane. They don’t have to be different, both candy canes can be the same.
Using a candy cane tracer, trace 2 shapes on the white paper.
Inside the candy cane, create curved sections.
Use white oil pastel to draw a vertical line from top to bottom, going side to side.
Coloured sections will alternate. Start with the lighter colour of the first section and colour side to side from the white line outwards. Fill in the rest with the darker colour, colouring side to side. It’s okay if you go outside the lines.
Repeat the steps with the next colour pair.
Repeat all steps on the second candy cane.
You can blend the colours using a tissue/paper towel.
Cut out the candy canes and glue them to the black background in any formation you’d like.
