New Year’s Eve Fireworks Art Project

While we’re never at school on New Year’s, it’s always fun to acknowledge the celebrations that took place over the holidays. This project is super quick and is easy to do the first week back since there’s no prep involved for the teacher.

Time required: 20-30 minutes

Materials:

  • Black paper

  • Chalk pastel (various colours)

There aren’t really specific steps for this project but I would recommend looking up some images of fireworks and talking about the shapes. What do they notice? What colours are there?

Before starting with the chalk pastel, it might be a good idea for students to practice drawing these shapes. You could do it on a scrap piece of paper, or a whiteboard.

When you’re ready to go, simply use the chalk pastels right on the black construction paper to make the fireworks. I suggest working top down so that we can avoid smudges.

You can try to stabilize the chalk pastel using hairspray. It’s not a guaranteed solution but it can help. It’s best to use one that has a really fine mist.
